The Top Design Trends
a talk at AISD inspired me to think about design trends - what's in, what's out and what's coming. these are the rules i'm designing by in 2018! what are your favorite trends?
PINK IS STILL IN
to be honest, pink will always be "in" for me. i am not so secretly obsessed with it. but i love the way it's being used in bold ways that break the "ultra-feminine" expectation. even if it's just an accent - like the elvis record cover and Pink Floyd tour flyer - i always find a way to incorporate it when I can.
some people think white is boring. sometimes i am one of those people. but i can't say enough about the practicality of white and other neutrals. when picking large-ticket items, like sofas, i love a good neutral. it transcends trends and lends itself to growing with you. that said, if you're going to go with a white or light-colored sofa, get a slipcover.
GREENERY IS THE NEW FLORAL
florals are out. filler is in. think monstera leaves, eucalyptus and belles of ireland. i love a good succulent, too. harder for me to kill. and this is where i ask for advice on keeping plants alive.
UNMADE BEDS ARE COOL
finally I have an legitimate excuse not to make my bed. i love that design is loosening up, that the lived-in look is being embraced - and, dare i say, championed. but in all seriousness, it's a trend that i think expresses a lot about the personality of the home and the client. it's also practical. because who really wants to assemble hundreds of pillows in the morning.
LEANING ART IS IN
Very excited about this trend, as well. it really lends itself to my lifestyle and design philosophy as i'm constantly buying art and rearranging it in my homes. i also love the look of massive pieces leaned against a wall. it says casual but sophisticated.
